John MacKinnon was born in 1842, the son of John and Christina MacKinnon of 1 Flodabay. He married Margaret MacLean on the island of Berneray in 1867. Their eldest son John was born there in 1869, but died in infancy. The other nine children were presumably born at the family home of 1 Flodabay.
