Alexander MacDonald

Alexander MacDonald, known as Alick, born in 1867, was the youngest child of William MacDonald and Marion MacLean, cottars in Ludag. He became a fisherman and yachtsman, living in a dwelling next to his parents, marrying Rebecca Paterson in 1898. They later moved to the newly built Pier House, in Backhill.

In November 1921, Alick and his crew rescued two men from the wreck of the Puritan following a severe gale. The rescuers received a reward from the King of Denmark the following year.

The searock Bodha Alaig Bhig was named after Alick.
