Rachel was the daughter of John MacLean and Marion MacKillop of Quay. Born in 1915, she was a pupil at Berneray School between 1921 and 1930.
Rachel MacLean married widower Alexander MacLean, with whom she was to have four children. Together they ran his business at 16 Backhill, the subject of the book Bùth Ailig.
