Norman was the son of John MacCuish and Mary Campbell of Boreray. Born in Trumisgarry in 1856, he became a cottar on Boreray and later on croft 13 Ruisgarry on the island of Berneray, where he lived with his sister Mary. Norman remained unmarried.
