Duncan was born in 1910, the second son of that name born to Donald John MacLeod and Betsy MacAskill of 16 Ruisgarry (Brusda). His mother died when Duncan was only 5 years old and his father later remarried. Duncan attended Berneray School from 1915 to 1924. He later settled in Glasgow.
