Norman was born in 1903, the son of Adam MacKay and Catherine MacKay of Baile. His father died when Norman was only three years old. Norman attended Berneray School for a few months in 1908, before his mother decided to return to Obbe. He later married Margaret MacLean from 19 Srannd.
