76795: Donald John MacLean

Donald John was born in 1918, the youngest son of John MacLean and Marion MacKillop of ‘house 16’ Quay. His father died when Donald John was still a young boy.

Donald John was a pupil at Berneray School between 1924 and 1931, leaving to attend Inverness Royal Academy. He and his wife had three children, living in Plockton.

In 1949 he was passed his aunt Mary’s house, ‘house 1’, at Quay. Donald John became writer-in-residence at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, recounting his memories of life on Berneray during his youth in the book Bùth Ailig. When the book was published in 1988 he was interviewed about his book, and the recording is available at Tobar an Dualchais.
