Donald was born in 1826, the son of Norman MacDonald and Chirsty Morrison of old Borve. The site of their home was later known as Tobhta Thormoid Dhuinne. Donald married twice, firstly to Margaret MacDermid of Lochmaddy, which is where they stayed, and secondly to Margaret MacInnes from Malaclete.
