Mary was born in 1862, the daughter of Malcolm MacLeod and Mary MacLean of Lamerick. Her mother died when she was about 12 years old. Mary became a domestic servant, marrying Hugh MacLean of 3 Quidinish in 1883. Their son Donald John was born the following year.
