91474: Alex Murray
Alex (1911-1980) was the son of Donald Murray and Isabella Maciver. The family were living with Donald’s parents, at 71 North Tolsta, at the time of Alex’s birth.
In 1922 the family obtained 13 New Tolsta.
Alex served in the Navy during the war and survived a torpedo attack on the HMS Carinthia.
Alex married Joan Macdonald of 6 New Tolsta and settled, as cottars, there with her. The couple had three children before Alex obtained 23 New Tolsta and built a house there. The house was known locally as “The Hut” as it was built from Nissan hut materials. A further three children were born there.
On the 20th of March 1959 the family moved to 12 North Tolsta, which they had purchased for approximately £350 from John Macdonald.
In 1968, Alex built an extension on the house.
