92698: Kenneth Maciver

Kenneth (1905-1942) was the son of Angus Maciver and Christina Maciver, of 36 North Tolsta.

Kenneth married Dolina Murray, of 25 Cross Skigersta, and settled there with her; they had one son.

During the Second World War Kenneth joined the Royal Navy Reserves and served aboard the HMS Achates. He was killed on the 31st of December 1942 during the Battle of Barents Sea. During the battle he helped a wounded man out of a flooding compartment and steered the ship with only a compass. He was killed when the wheelhouse was destroyed by shelling. His actions during this battle were posthumously mentioned in despatches, and accounts of his actions can be found on HMS Achates Wikipedia page and at the North Tolsta Historic Society website. He is also mentioned in Sir Dudley Pope’s book 73 North: The Battle of the Barents Sea.

His widow moved to 22 Port of Ness after his death.
