Murdo served with the Seaforth Highlanders during the First World War. He served on the front line in France from 1915.

In March 1918 he was injured on the battlefield during a German offensive. His Commanding Officer wrote to his father, saying his son was one of the bravest men he had ever met.

In July 1918 he was awarded the Military Medal.

In February 1919 he was awarded a bar to the Military Medal. By the end of the war he had been mentioned twice in Dispatches.

Murdo married Christina Maciver of 38 North Tolsta and the couple settled as cottars at 48 North Tolsta. They had four children; three boys and a girl.

In due course the cottars house at 48 North Tolsta passed to his eldest son.
