92855: Roderick Murray
Roderick (1847-1924) was the son of Angus Murray and Annie Macdonald, of 18 Old North Tolsta.
In 1853, Old North Tolsta was decrofted to form Tolsta Farm, the family settled at 40 North Tolsta: after the previous occupant lost the croft.
Roderick married Margaret Stewart, of 15 Laxdale, the couple settled at Goathill Road, Stornoway and had their first three children. He worked as a gardener for Lady Matheson and they went to England with her. Seonaidh is said to have been born there.
In 1891, after his brother John’s death, Roderick inherited 40 North Tolsta and the family settled there. The couple had their final child in 1892.
In total they had four children: three boys and a girl.
In due course 40 North Tolsta passed to their youngest son: John.
