93061: John Maciver

John (1908-1945) was the son of Alexander Maciver and Jessie Graham. It is not known where John was born.

In 1922 the family obtained 14 New Tolsta as a newly lotted croft.

John married Catherine Campbell, of 44 North Tolsta, and the couple settled at 44 North Tolsta and had one son, John Angus.

During the war John served on board the MV Richmond Castle which was torpedoed and sunk by a U-boat on the fourth of August 1942. As a result of John’s skilled seamanship, a lifeboat from the torpedoed liner, was saved; he earned the British Empire Medal (B.E.M.), Atlantic Star, 1939-45 Star and African Star. However, John never recovered from the incident and died on the tenth of May 1945.
