Donald (1845-1909) was the son of Roderick Mackay and Christina Macdonald; it is not known where he was born, but his father was from 16 Old North Tolsta and his mother from Melbost, Borve.
In 1857 the family obtained 50 North Tolsta as a newly lotted croft.
Donald married Mary Maciver, of 33 Coll, it is not known for certain where they initially settled and had their first child, but it is possible they were cottars at 44 North Tolsta for a time.
In 1878 the family obtained 64 North Tolsta after the former occupant, Jessie Macinnes, moved away.
The couple had a further four children at 64 North Tolsta. In total they had five children: three girls and two boys.
In due course 64 North Tolsta passed to their youngest son: Roderick.
