Angus was the son of Duncan Maclean and Margaret Campbell; it is not clear where he was born his parents were initially cottars at 51 North Tolsta, but at some point the family obtained Sighthill Cottage, North Tolsta.

He married Katie Ann Mackay of 18 New Tolsta and settled with her in Glasgow.
