In 1830, during the croft lottings, his parents obtained 10 Old South Tolsta.

On the 9th of January 1840 he married Annabella Morrison and the couple settled in Bayhead, Stornoway where Louis worked as a Shoemaker.

In the 1850s the family obtained 3 Laxdale and settled there, they had eight children: four boys and four girls. Louis drowned, in the Laxdale river, in 1856, prior to the birth of his last child.
