Alexander John was the son of Alexander Macmillan and Annabella Maciver; it is not clear where the family were living at the time of his birth. His paternal grandparents lived at  4 Glen Tolsta and his maternal grandparents lived at 38 North Tolsta.

In 1922 the family obtained 46 Gress, but later settled at 35 Coll.

Alexander John inherited 35 Coll, but never married.
