108028: South Uist Historical Society Archive

South Uist Historical Society (Comunn Eachdraidh Uibhist a Deas) has an extensive archive of artefacts, photographs and documents. 

At the core of the artefact collection are the objects gathered during the 1950s and 1960s by the late Father John Morrison, parish priest of Iochdar, South Uist.

Significant photographic archives are held depicting life in South Uist, notably that of Margaret Fay Shaw (1903-2004), folklorist and photographer, to whom the archive room at Kildonan Museum is dedicated. The photographic collection also includes collections by Bill Innes and Dr Robertson. 

The museum hosts a permanent exhibition relating to the island.
