108800: Ordnance Survey Name Books

Ordnance Survey name books were used to record information about the names of places that feature on the first Ordnance Survey maps compiled around the middle of the 19th century. As well as listing the names together with their locations and recommended spellings, the books often have additional information about the places to which the names refer. 

Lewis place-names feature under Ross & Cromarty, whose name books were compiled during the period 1848 to 1852. The other Western Isles, including Harris and Uist, belonged in Inverness-shire and were surveyed between 1876 and 1878.

Searchable transcripts and digitisations of the name books were added to the ScotlandsPlaces website in 2013.
