Lewis: a history of the island  was authored by Donald Macdonald (1904-1990), of North Tolsta.

It contains a wide-ranging history of the island of Lewis, including prehistoric, medieval and modern history, land struggles, emigration, fishing, other industries, education, the Church and ethnographic detail, and is drawn in part from personal experience and oral tradition.

It was first published in 1978 by Gordon Wright Publishing Ltd. (ISBN 9780903065238), and later republished in 2004 by Steve Savage Publishers Ltd. (ISBN 9781904246084).
