29177: Beer Making in Laxay
Tale about the first brewery in Laxay
It was reputed that at one time an enterprising shopkeeper from Laxay discovered a way of making beer. He bought hundredweight bags of hops from the mainland which were in hessian bags marked ‘Guinness’. They had to be soaked in running water to get rid of any impurities and so he used to place them in the middle of Abhainn Eallaidh, just south of the bridge; hence the name Gil a Lionnadh. Afterwards, he boiled the hops, bottled the beer in screwtop bottles and sold them.
