John (born c1788) was a son of Donald Matheson and Christina Macdonald from Crowlista.

In 1828 John and his siblings emigrated to Canada and settled at Little Narrows, Cape Breton.

John married Mary Unknown and moved to Whycocomagh, Cape Breton where they had two of their seven children. The family returned to Little Narrows.
