This small tack, along with 2 Doune, lay about a quarter of a mile from the main village and was accessed by a track. The children had a long walk to the school at Doune.

The first tenant of this croft was John Smith (b1781) from Pabbay Mor who arrived in 1828 when Doune was divided into crofts . When Doune was cleared in 1853, John moved to 4 Valtos with his daughter Annabella and her family.

When the village was resettled in 1872, Norman Macleod from Reef was the tenant. His son-in-law Malcolm inherited the croft, followed by his own son Donald (b1885) and latterly Donald’s daughter Peggy.
