108760: Gearraidh Scoir, Lewis

Gearraidh Scoir was a small settlement on the edge of Tong Sands, close to Laxdale and adjacent to the broad promontory shown on today’s maps as Gob Gearraidh Scoir Bheag. It was occupied in the mid-19th century and is described in the Ordnance Survey Name Book for Lewis as comprising a few huts that in all respects “present a most miserable appearance”.

The settlement is shown on an 1849 Ordnance Survey map, with five separate buildings and five parcels of land, but it does not feature on a map compiled half a century later. The area may have been affected by erosion during the intervening period.
