Norman was born in 1935, the second child of James MacCuish and Ann MacAskill of 17 Borve, later 19 Borve. Following the death of his mother in childbirth, his father remarried, to Marion MacKillop.  

Norman and his wife, who was from Eriskay, settled in Oban.
