Effie was born in 1902, the daughter of Donald MacAskill and Annie Morrison of Ferry. She was a pupil at Berneray School between 1909 and 1916. In 1911 she and her older brother John Archie were living at 3 Borve with her maternal grandparents.
Effie was regarded as an accomplished bardess. She had a son John Archie MacAskill and married Donald MacLean from Tiree. They settled in London.
