Mary, also known as Mary Ann, was born in 1858, the daughter of John Paterson and Christina Munro of Taigh a’ Chiobair, Borve. Mary Ann became a domestic servant, moving to Duror in Argyllshire. In 1888 she married Donald MacKenzie in Appin. Together they were to have four children, living in Port Appin: Christina, John, Catherine and Alexander.
