118498: Kenneth Macaulay

Kenneth (1723-1779) was a son of Aulay Macaulay and Margaret Morrison.

In 1758, as a newly ordained minister, Kenneth visited St Kilda. In 1764, whilst the mininster in Ardnamurchan, Kenneth published observations of his trip as a report for the Society for Propagating Christian Knowledge: The history of St Kilda (published in London by T. Becket and P.A. de Hondt).

In 1773, Kenneth, whilst the Church of Scotland minister in Cawdor, was visited by Dr Samuel Johnson and James Boswell during their tour of the Scottish Highlands and islands. Johnson was familiar with The history of St Kilda; although he liked the account, he incorrectly doubted Kenneth’s authorship of the book.
