16241: John Mackenzie

John Mackenzie (born 1878), son of Alexander Mackenzie and Mary Macaulay, lived at 1 Aird Uig.

He was in the Seaforth Highlanders during the Boer War and there is a story in the family that he and another soldier were lost on the Veldt for ten days without food. They survived by eating a tin of axle grease (made from vegetable oil and animal fats in those days) and this was the cause of his life-long stomoch problems.

John married Peggy Morrison and they went to Chicago around 1920. They returned about 30 years later, possibly after Peggy’s brother was killed in the States. John inherited croft 1 Aird Uig in 1947.

The croft passed to his neice Peggy Anna Matheson (Peigi Anna na Leadaidh), 6 Aird Uig, daughter of his sister Kate.
