50186: William Macrae

William (born 1859) was a son of James Macrae, of Miavaig Farm and House. He spent some time with his two brothers in Duluth, Minnesota, where he had learned to ice-skate. He used to go skating on Loch Geshader as it froze over before Loch a’ Sgaillear.

In 1883, William was studying for the ministry but had to give it up to come home. He succeeded his father as inspector of the Poor in Uig.

William’s first wife was Margaret Morrison, 32 Valtos and they had two children. His  second wife was Mary Mackay of 18 Valtos and they had four children.
