70317: Roderick MacAskill

Roderick MacAskill was born in 1870, the second son of that name born to Peter MacAskill and Ann MacAskill. Presumably he was born on 7 Ruisgarry; his father was passed part of the croft – 7/1 in 1887, and later 6 Ruisgarry, which were combined..

Roderick became a yachtsman and married Mary Munro in 1894. Sadly she died of tuberculosis in 1902 – the couple had no children. Roderick was passed the enlarged 6 Beasdaire on his father’s death in 1919, becoming a crofter. When he himself died in 1951 the croft was passed to nephew John MacKenzie.

Roderick is mentioned in one of Iain Archie MacAskill’s poems Litir gu Caraid ann am Bearnaraidh (1929), published in An Ribeid Chiuil.
