72114: Mary MacAskill

Mary MacAskill from Eigg, was born in 1791, the daughter of schoolmaster John MacAskill and Christina MacAskill. She became a schoolteacher herself, and settled on the island of Berneray with her husband Roderick MacGillivray. They lived on a large croft in old Ruisgarry, where their daughter Jessie was born.

The crofts in Ruisgarry were relotted in 1850, and the MacGillivrays obtained 8 Ruisgarry (Baile). Mary was widowed by 1851, but remained a schoolteacher and took on the role of farmer. The residence must have been fairly substantial – her household included a succession of lodgers and servants.

Mary died in 1872, passing 8 Ruisgarry onto her son-in-law Archibald Paterson.
