Colin was the son of Allan Murray and Ann Macleod of 22 Gress. The family had previously lived at 4 North Tolsta, but it is not certain Colin lived there.

Colin married Margaret Murray of 45 North Tolsta and the couple settled at 10 Sand Street, Stornoway.
