John (born 1903) was the son of Donald Smith and Isabella Macleod who were cottars at 56 North Tolsta. It is not certain where the family were living at the time of his birth; initially they were cottars at 11 North Tolsta, but later moved and became cottars at 56 North Tolsta.
It is possible that John lived at 11 New Tolsta for a time with his parents when they moved there in 1922.
John married Christina Nicolson of 9 North Tolsta and the two settled in Golspie, Sutherland.
They had at least one son, who married a girl from Uig.
