50158: Ladies Highland Association School, Gravir

One of the earliest schools in Gravir was at what is now croft No 20. It was a black house known as “Sgoil na Leddies” and was set up in 1854, funded by the Ladies Highland Association. This, along with an Uig school, was their venture in Lewis.

In 1864 the schoolmaster was H Cameron, supported by Miss Cameron as sewing mistress. They had a roll of 82, with three pupils learning Latin.

The Ladies’ School was replaced in 1881 by the new Public School at Gravir.

There is also reference to an earlier school that may have been on the croft at 21 Gravir.
