76493: SSPCK School, Isle of Berneray

<<19927##The Society in Scotland for Propagating Christian Knowledge>> established a school on Berneray by 1850. Between 1850 and 1867 the SSPCK schoolmaster on Berneray was Donald MacKay, who was paid £18 a year. From 1865 to 1881, Donald MacLean is shown as Gaelic schoolmaster. The school was held in school adjacent to the schoolhouse in Rubha Mor.

In 1854 there were 48 pupils on the roll.

A new school was built at Ludag in 1877, at the northern end of the island.
