117426: Uisdean Mhic Ghilleasbuig Chleirich

There are several versions of this satire, composed by Mary MacVicar following the murder of her brothers by Hugh MacDonald. This comes from a paper by Alick Morrison, The Grianam Case:

Uisdean Mhic Ghilleasbuig Chlèirich

Far a laigh thu slàn, na èirich

Sgeul do bhàis gu mnathan Slèibhte

‘S thugam sa mo chuid fèin dheth

‘S do mhionach a bhi luib do lèine

Which can be translated as:

Hugh, son of Archibald the Clerk

Where you lie in health, rise not.

May news of your death reach the women of Sleat

And may I receive my share of it.

May your entrails cover your shirt.
