107353: Asmigarry, Lewis

Àsmaigearraidh; Asum Gearraidh; Asum Geàrraidh

Asmigarry was an isolated farmstead located on the Dell moor, between North Galson and South Dell. The name is written ‘Asum Gearraidh’ on the first Ordnance Survey maps published in the 1850s.

Oral tradition maintains that the name commemorates a Norseman who once lived there and whose name was Asim, while from a more academic perspective, it has been proposed that the original form of the name would have been Ásmundar-Garðr, meaning Osmund’s farm. Thus although the earliest record of occupation is in 1812-16, the settlement may well be much older.

Asmigarry was abandoned around 1854 on the death of the last tenant, Alexander Nicolson. The ruins are still visible today.
