115385: Glen Hinnisdale, Skye
Glen Hinnisdale is an area in Skye. There were several separate settlements in the area that were cleared before 1875.
- Glen Hinnisdale was a township on the north facing slope of Glenhinnisdale, Skye. It was added to Kingsburgh Farm in around 1820. It is currently abandoned.
- Glen Hinnisdal, a run-rig township at the west end of Glen Hinnisdale. Which comprised about 20 buildings and was apparently abandoned well before 1875.
- Glen Hinnisdal, an abandoned township of about 12 houses, situated on the lower west slope of Glen Hinnisdale hillside.
- More information can be found on the canmore website.
The Ordnance Survey maps of 1875 show a small settlement marked Glenhinnisdal on the northern side of the river, but the 1875-78. Revised in 1901 version has the settlement in this location named Peinaha. In both maps the entire area around the river seems to be named Glen Hinnisdal.
The settlement is also described in an 1876-1878 log of the names on the Ordnance Survey maps where Glen Hinnisdale and Glen Hinnisdal are given as the alternate spellings for the settlement. Significantly the log has been corrected in both cases to omit the 'e' off the end of both names. The following entry accompanies the name:
Is applied to a long narrow district of country lying on both sides of the River Hinisdale and containing the smaller districts of Balmeanoch, Benlea, Glenwauker. The south side is the property of Lord MacDonald and the other that of Capt [Captain] W Fraser
The area now includes several settlements and a forest plantation that belongs to the Kingsburgh Forest Trust.
