Sine Dhomhnaill Ruairidh

Jane (born 1822) was a daughter of Donald Ross and Mary Macbeath, Norway House, Manitoba. The family also lived at York Factory, Manitoba.

At Norway House, in 1848, she married widower, the Rev James Hunter from Devon. The couple lived at Red River, Manitba and they had six children only four of whom survived.

Rev James Hunter preached the Gospel to the Cree people and he and Jane continued the work of Rev James Evans in written Cree and published translations of the Gospels of St Mark, St John, Catechism and Hymn Books.

The Hunters returned to Britain in 1865 and lived at the Manse at St Mathew's Church in Bayswater.

The couple are buried in Highgate Cemetery, London and the inscription on their grave reads.  “By their joint labours they gave the Bible and the Prayer Book in their native tongue to the Cree Indians of Northwest America.”
