John (1881-1919) was the son of John Smith and Mary Campbell from 14 North Bragar.
At Shawbost, in 1909, he married Catherine M Macleod, 11 South Shawbost. John and Catherine lived at 11 South Shawbost and they had four children.
John enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve, service number 3516B and served in the Royal Navy in the First World War. He was on the crew of HMS Duchess of Devonshire.
John lost his life in the Iolaire Disaster and is buried in the Old Church Yard, Bragar. He is commemorated on the Bragar War Memorial, the Lewis War Memorial, Loyal Lewis: Roll of Honour, and the Iolaire Memorial at Holm and Stornoway.
