Hugh was a son of Murdo Matheson and Catherine Mackay, Stornoway. The family lived in the area that is now Manor Farm. Hugh was a Mariner.

In 1843 he was living at Bayhead when he married Isabella Macdonald, Guershader. Hugh and Isabella lived in Stornoway and they had a daughter, Catherine.
