Iain Mhurchaidh Choinnich
John Mackenzie (1832-1906) was a son of Murdo Mackenzie and Catherine Macdonald, 6 Old Orinsay.
Orinsay was cleared in 1843 and the family were removed to 15 Crossbost.
In Lochs, in 1858, he married Janet Martin, 21 Balallan. John and Janet settled at 20 Crossbost and they had eight children.
John was one of the 18 landless cottars who sailed from Crossbost to raid and occupy their former village of Orinsay which was let as a grazings farm to his brother in law, Roderick Martin in the 1880s under a lease for 19 years at a rent of 50 per annum.
On 9 April 1891, twelve of the raiders, including John, were tried under the Trespass (Scotland) Act of 1865. They were found guilty and given the maximum sentence of 14 days imprisonment in Inverness.
