Malcolm was a son of John Matheson and Janet Morrison. They lived in Valtos until 1773 when he moved to Crowlista – he is on record as tenant there at various dates between 1771 and 1780. Malcolm appears as signatory of a petition to the chamberlain of Lewis dated at Stornoway 26th April 1773 asking that rents be reduced and certain grievances be redressed.

He was married and they had at least two children.
