John (1799-1892) was the eldest son of Murdo Smith and Henrietta Macleod, 12 Old Doune Carloway.
He married Catherine Macleod, 8 Enaclete, Uig who died two years after their daughter, Mary was born.
He then married Margaret Maclennan, 11 Old Doune Carloway. John and Margaret settled at 12 Old Doune Carloway and they had three children.
When Doune was cleared in 1853, John moved to 45 Upper Carloway.
