Arthur Bates, of Stoke-on-Trent, moved to Stornoway where he sold china and glassware from a van.
He met Catherine Macleod, of 34 North Tolsta. The couple married and settled in England.
For a while Arthur had a caravan on Garry Beach and he allowed John Macdonald to live in it for a short while.
