John Mackay lived at 13 Aignish. He was imprisoned for his part in the Aignis Riots in 1888.

He married Barbara Macleod of Pairc Dhànaidh, North Tolsta. The couple settled in Newton Street, Stornoway. Barbara had a son, Donald. The couple had two children.
