Ann Matheson was a daughter of Norman Matheson and Chirsty Macritchie, born in Carnish about 1826. She married John Gillies of Croigarry.

From the 1871 census, it appears that Ann and John (a shepherd "out of employ") are living in Stornoway parish (Newmarket Hill?) with their children: Peggie (1853), Murdo (1855), Donald (1857), Mary (1858), Isabella (1862), Normina (1863)and Angus (1866). and? Christina. Ann’s unmarried sister Rachel is living with them too.
