Angus MacLean was born in 1835, the son of Alexander MacLean and Mary MacAskill of old Ruisgarry. The family moved to 11 Ruisgarry (Quay), which Angus's father obtained in 1850. Angus worked on the croft, and in 1857 married Rachel Paterson, with whom he was to have seven children. They settled as cottars at Quay, Angus working both as a fisherman and a farm labourer.
Son Angus's children Katie and Rachel were staying at Quay with Angus and his wife at the time of the 1911 census.
